Encourage your Member of Congress to address the needs of the vulnerable

A Franciscan approach to the economy is driven by love and trust, not fear and suspicion. It challenges excess. The challenge today is to let this radical love and trust resonate with us and how we approach policy in light of the economic crisis. It is not yet clear how new legislative policy related to the deepening worldwide financial crisis will help those most vulnerable, if at all. To assure that legislation is enacted to care for those who are most adversely affected by the economic crisis, Franciscan Action Network members are encouraged to contact their Congressional Representative and Senators to advocate that policy formed and enacted in a time of crisis does not neglect those most in need.

Stop foreclosing on poor, vulnerable, and middle class
At this 11th hour before the 110th Congress adjourns, legislators are faced with the largest corporate bailout in history. At the direction of the President, the Secretary of the Treasury of the United States together with the Chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank is asking for an historic $700,000,000,000 ($700B) to bail out the nation’s major lending institutions.
Unscrupulous loan practices, a downturn in the housing market, and an unprecedented amount of foreclosures resulted in widespread pooling, buying, and selling of dubious loans on Wall Street; a recipe for financial chaos ( The New York Times, Peter Goodman, "Experts See a Need for Punitive Action in Bailout,” 9/22/08).
As Congress reacts to calls for quick action, FAN calls on its members to act as well, but to reflect on our culture's tendency towards excess and immediacy. These root causes, along with persons on the margins, may escape the notice of legislators in a hurry. Therefore it is our responsibility to share the wealth of our Franciscan perspective with them.

Write the U.S. State Department and ask them to continue to encourage the nations surrounding Zimbabwe in southern Africa in their diplomatic efforts to find a peaceful solution to the election crisis.

Franciscan Action Network (FAN) in partnership with Franciscans International (FI) asks you to take immediate action to support the people of Zimbabwe at this time of crisis. We have heard from our Franciscan brothers and sisters in Zimbabwe of the brutal violence that continues to escalate daily. Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe and his political party are not allowing the people of Zimbabwe to experience a free and fair election. The best course of action we can take is to write our U.S. State Department and ask them to continue to encourage the nations surrounding Zimbabwe in southern Africa in their diplomatic efforts to find a peaceful solution. Your voice can help to strengthen the U.S. involvement and support for peace. Send a customizable email to Secretary of State Rice by clicking on "Take Action." Our action represents an attempt to bring a Franciscan spirit of peace and reconciliation to this grave crisis. Through our Franciscan sisters and brothers, we know that they and the people of Zimbabwe will be grateful for your action. Please keep them in your prayers.”
